Law is a system of rules that are created and enforced through social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior. It has been defined both as "the science of justice" and "the art of justice". Law regulates and ensures that individuals or a community adhere to the will of the state. legislature or by a single legislator, resulting in statutes, by the executive through decrees and regulations, or established by judges through precedent , normally in common law jurisdictions.
To this day virtually any country of the world has some extremely weird laws. Some of them go back to the times when they made sense, some others are actually not as old as they seem. Some can be perfectly explained, the others just make no sense. Below are some of the weird laws in some countries.
1. Switzerland - Hiking Naked
Swiss and Germans have quite a complicated relationship. Thus it is very symbolic that one of the weirdest laws in the country has been introduced because of a German citizen. In 2009 a naked German citizen walked by a Swiss family picnicking in the Alps. In 2011 Switzerland’s highest court ruled that local authorities can, in fact, impose bans on naked hiking. Interestingly enough, Switzerland doesn’t have a country wide law about public nudity.
2. US - Farting in Florida After 6PM
It is technically illegal to fart in Florida after 6PM. While the law isn’t actively enforced, it is still officially in place. What is more important that it is actually only illegal on Thursdays. Thus, if you want to release those gases you obtained while eating broccoli soup, you better hold it in. It is not exactly known when the law originated and how exactly it should be enforced. Especially given that an average person releases gases around 30-40 times a day. And most times, it is done involuntarily.
3. France - Naming a Pig Napoleon
If you got a pig and want to name it something cool. It's better not to name it Napoleon, or, in fact, any other current or previous head of state. The law has been modified and as of today it is no longer a criminal offense. There are still significant fines for naming a pig the same as a head of the state though.
4. Singapore - Chewing Gum
It is absolutely illegal to chew gums in Singapore. Not only in public places. Anywhere. At all times. In fact, gums are banned in the country. While this law might seem extremely discriminative, it kind of makes sense. Since Singapore had banned gums in 1992, the streets have become much cleaner. And also, there are certain exceptions. Chewing gums is allowed if one can prove that it has a therapeutic effect.
5. Hong Kong - K!lling a Cheating Husband
This one is from Hong Kong. There’s a law that allows a wife to k!ll her husband if she finds him cheating. There is a trick though. She has to k!ll him with her bare hands. Therefore, if you are a husband – don’t cheat. And if you are a wife of a cheating husband, no weapons can be used if you decide to k!ll him.
6. Italy - Feeding a Bird in Venice
You know how it is always portrayed as a good thing helping animals in the city? Well, not in Venice. A fine of up to $700 is in store for those feeding pigeons on St. Mark’s Square in the city. This was once the city’s most affordable and popular entertainments and now it absolutely banned by local officials.
7. Samoa - Forgetting Wife’s Birthday
Forgetting your wife’s birthday is actually illegal in Samoa. It is probably better for a poor husband to face the law than to face the wrath of his wife. Anyways, this law is weird, but makes sense though.
8. Portugal - Urinating In the Ocean
It is absolutely illegal to pee in the ocean in Portugal. The only problem is that it is extremely hard to check wether someone did. Maybe, they will be using the same technology they do in the swimming pools at some point and color the water when someone pee in it.
